FILM FESTIVALS WITH STYLE

The first San Francisco Fashion Film Festival begins March 25, 2012

For  the 2013 TCM Classic Film Festival - see my blog post:

Ziegfeld Girl will be the first film shown at the Festival. It stars Lana Turner, Judy Garland, and Hedy Lamarr with costumes designed by Adrian.

Here is the news release from our fashion-conscious film fan colleagues in San Francisco:

"The San Francisco Fashion Film Festival (FashFilmFest) today announced its film lineup and schedule of events.  FashFilmFest’s inaugural debut explores the role of design, style and costume in cinema in a series of events that take place from March 25th – April 8th, and includes several iconic venues including the Roxie Theater and de Young Museum.

FashFilmFest will present eight feature-length films, 8 documentary shorts and 14 fashion shorts submitted by filmmakers from Amsterdam, The Netherlands and London, United Kingdom

The co-founders of the FashFilmFest selected films from a shortlist of 25 titles, grouping films together to develop related themes. “We wanted to create a balance of classic and contemporary, provocative and entertaining,” said Annie Wilson, Co-Founder. “We selected films that have had an impact on the worlds of fashion and culture through their costuming or visual style. We also wanted to represent lesser-known documentaries and the amazing creativity of independent filmmakers in the fashion sector.”
Feature-length films will cost $15 while shorts will cost $10 per group. Festival passes may be purchased for $75. All tickets and passes are now available for purchase on Eventbrite: http://fashfilmfest.eventbrite.com/ or see their website: www.fashfilmfest.org.

It's great to see a film festival that emphasizes fashion or costume design. I hope FashFilmFest will be a great success and will become an annual event. The film possibilities are endless.

TCM PRESENTS ITS 3RD ANNUAL CLASSIC FILM FESTIVAL IN HOLLYWOOD.

The usual pattern of classic film screenings, film introductions by star cast or crew, restoration premieres, and various meet and greet events will highlight the 2012 Festival set for April 12-15 in Hollywood. The over-all theme of the Festival will be Style and the Movies, featuring several films designed by the late costume designer Travis Banton during his heyday at Paramount (see my post Batty for Banton). Architecture and set designs will also be featured. And as another special feature, Kim Novak will also be honored at the Festival.

"Screenings and events will be held at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, Chinese 6 Theatres, the Egyptian Theatre and, for the first time this year, Arclight Cinema's Cinerama Dome and The Avalon." The great classics Cover Girl, The Scarlet Empress, Trouble in Paradise, Swing Time, The Women, Vertigo, Sabrina, Funny Face, The Thomas Crowne Affair, Cabaret, and How the West Was Won will be shown among many others.

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard, which has a longstanding role in movie history and was the site of the first Oscar ceremonies, will be the event's headquarters. Robert Osborne and Ben Mankiewicz will again host the Festival. It's sure to be another great one.

Christian - I didn't know about the SF Fashion Film Festival at all - and would love to see "Ziegfeld Girl" on the big screen. Thanks for the heads up.

But you know what, Christian, for all the spectacle of Ziegfeld Girls, my favorite moment is Judy singing "Chasing Rainbows"--it's so touching. And love rough, tough Jimmy Stewart, too! GREAT movie and boy, would I love to see it on the big screen! Alas, one CA trip a year is about all I can swing...
Hugs, Kay

I'm green with envy! What a great experience this will be. I would love to see Ziegfield Girl in that venue. The costume you pictured at the top is so gorgeous, as are all of them!

Thanks so much for the post, Christian! I'm reading your book about Adrian now to get ready for ZEIGFELD GIRL at our festival!

We would LOVE to see people in vintage for our screenings too!

Thanks for your comment Kay. I understand about you loving the Judy Garland Chasing Rainbows song number - she's so wonderful. It's great that in this film it wasn't all eye-candy. The Jimmy Stewart character and the Lana Turner character reflected the tougher aspects of the Ziegfeld girl life.

ClassicBecky and Ms P. and C., thanks for your comments. The costumes in this movie are just amazing and MGM did a great job of photographing them as stills. There are several in my book, so I hope you enjoy it Ms P and C. Becky we'll just have to view it on a smaller but still silver screen.

Well Page,I'm glad I passed the test, and the hazing hasn't been too bad. But I was told I had to be fabulous or I'd be booted out! Weren't you the one that told me that? Anyway thanks for all the encouragement and YES, I'd love to do a blogathon with you - and I even have an idea for one. We'll talk soon.

Christian,
I've been reading a few bios on our fab stars and they often mention who provides their costumes. Like Hedy for example.

I was wondering if you know about Adrian, Irene and Edith getting along, where they friends and did they share design info, advice? I'm really fascinated by Irene but you don't hear that much about her.

I'm excited to hear your blogathon idea.

Since you're our fabulous fashion guru have you ever thought about doing quick posts with a star wearing a costume or any significant dress then have us guess the film and designer? I think that would be fun.

Thanks for the comment and idea Page. The costume designers of the golden age were basically all polite to each other, but there were jealousies. Adrian had many parties, and since his wife Janet Gaynor was well known, his circle was mainly other stars and some of the leading writers or artists or composers of the day. Irene's brother in law was Cedric Gibbons, and she was close to Gary Cooper. Edith Head also loved to entertain at home (her husband was a studio art director). Though the designers would see each other occasionally, this occured mainly at more formal Hollywood events.

I'll get back to you on my blogathon ideas, yours is great.

Hi Christian,

Incredibly, we have never met. I'm Kimberly from GlamAmor. I cover Style in the Movies extensively and show how it continues to influence design today. I've actually been asked by TCM to cover the festival and just got confirmation of my media credentials--woo hoo! I'm also a friend of Kay's and will be at the Musso's dinner, so I really hope to meet you there. Here's my own announcement of the festival:
http://www.glamamor.com/2012/02/tcm-classic-film-festival-2012-style-in.html

And I've been doing a Month (or so) of Art Deco on GlamAmor, which includes both the film fashion as well as LA architecture. I hope you'll check it out. Today's post was on the iconic Louise Brooks.

Take care,

Kimberly
